Bellevue Remodel

Location: Bellevue, WA

Area: 1,200 SF

Project Team: Grouparchitect

Project Description:

This mid-century modern home renovation project balances the rich, timeless appeal of classic design with contemporary updates to meet the needs of today’s homeowner. The residence, with its characteristic low-slung roofline, exposed beams, and large windows, was originally built in the mid-20th century and remained a striking example of the architectural era. However, it required a series of significant updates, both inside and out, to enhance functionality, comfort, and modern style.

One of the primary goals of the project was to enlarge the public living spaces and to add a modern owner's suite, complete with a walk-in closet and bath. The design carefully respected the home's original character, ensuring that while these changes brought the house into the 21st century, they didn’t detract from its mid-century charm.

To achieve this, the renovation included a full interior remodel that focused on reorganizing the existing space to create better flow and more generous proportions for the living, dining, and kitchen areas. By rethinking the storage solutions and improving circulation patterns, these public spaces were made the focal point upon entry. Now, the house invites an open, flowing experience, where the living areas seamlessly connect to create an ideal environment for entertaining, relaxing, or simply enjoying everyday life.

At the heart of the home is the original hearth, which was preserved as a central feature to maintain a direct link to the home’s history. The fireplace’s bold, clean lines remain a striking centerpiece, anchoring the modernized interior with a tangible connection to its mid-century roots. This decision not only pays homage to the past but also ensures that the home retains a sense of warmth and authenticity amidst the updates.

The architectural update also included a small addition to create the much-desired owner's suite. The suite was designed to feel like a peaceful, private retreat within the home, boasting a spacious walk-in closet and a contemporary bathroom with clean, sleek lines and modern fixtures. This addition provides the homeowners with the luxury of a personalized space that is practical, comfortable, and stylish, while the design language continues to honor the home's mid-century aesthetic.

On the exterior, the house was revitalized to enhance curb appeal while preserving its original architectural elements. The exaggerated roofline and exposed beams, two hallmarks of mid-century modern design, were carefully restored, and the expansive windows, which bring in natural light and connect the home with its surrounding landscape, were updated for energy efficiency. New exterior finishes and thoughtful landscaping were added to bring a fresh look to the property, complementing the timeless architectural lines.

In the end, this renovation successfully brought this mid-century modern home into the present while respecting its historical roots. The project demonstrates that with thoughtful design and sensitive updates, it is possible to enhance a home’s functionality and beauty without sacrificing the essence that made it special in the first place. The result is a home that is as functional and comfortable as it is visually stunning, offering the perfect blend of mid-century charm and modern convenience.
