Rockies Residence

Location: Telluride, CO

Area: 3,200 SF

Project Team: Grouparchitect

Project Description:

Nestled among the aspens on a steep slope in the breathtaking landscape of Telluride, this modern prefabricated residence represents a harmonious blend of thoughtful design and practical construction. The modular approach not only tackled the challenges posed by the short building season typical of the region but also harmonized with the environment, maximizing the stunning mountain views and natural daylight.

The residence is constructed from prefabricated modules, a decision driven by the necessity to streamline the building process due to Telluride's limited construction windows. This method not only sped up the construction timeline but also minimized environmental disruption, a crucial consideration given the delicate natural landscape surrounding the site.

The design of the home is meticulously oriented to capture the expansive views of the mountains. Large windows and strategically placed living spaces ensure that the beauty of the outdoors is never out of sight, fostering a connection between the interior and the majestic outdoors.

Part of the design process included studying the natural daylight that enters the house from dawn to dusk. Our study informed the layout to maximize natural light, particularly in the living areas, making the home feel open and airy. This is complemented by the use of reflective and light-colored interior surfaces that enhance the brightness and sense of space within the home.

Functionality and aesthetics go hand in hand in this residence. The steep slope of the site presented significant challenges that were skillfully addressed through the home's structural design. The modular units are tiered, adapting to the contours of the landscape, which allows each segment of the home to maintain stability and integrity while providing unique vantage points over the surrounding terrain.

The exterior of the house features materials that blend with the natural setting, such as wood and stone, which help integrate the structure into the forested background. The rooflines and external fixtures are designed to offer resistance to the harsh weather conditions prevalent in the area, ensuring durability while maintaining a sleek, contemporary look.

Inside, the home is a testament to modern living, equipped with state-of-the-art amenities that ensure comfort and efficiency. The interior design emphasizes simplicity and functionality, with an open floor plan that encourages flow and connectivity between different areas of the house.

This Telluride prefab residence is a prime example of how modern modular construction can meet the dual goals of environmental sensitivity and contemporary design, providing a functional, beautiful living space that respects and utilizes its natural surroundings to the fullest.
