Lake Chelan Cabin Remodel

Location: Chelan, WA

Area: 2,000 SF

Project Description:

The Bee House renovation project is an architectural transformation of a lakeside retreat, situated on the northernmost property on Lake Chelan. Known for its access to numerous outdoor activities and breathtaking views of both the lake and the surrounding mountains, the home’s owners sought to enhance their outdoor living space while preserving its rustic charm. This project focuses on a refreshed deck configuration, a reimagined entry canopy, and an interior remodel that optimizes kitchen and bathroom functionality, bringing a modern flair to the existing cabin.

One of the key challenges in this project was designing a more prominent and welcoming entryway, in line with the homeowners' desire for a stronger architectural presence. The new entry canopy not only adds a sense of arrival but also creates a sheltered, inviting space that welcomes visitors into the home. Constructed with exposed wood beams and a modern, minimalist form, the canopy is a nod to the existing structure's rustic elements while also introducing contemporary lines and clean edges that subtly modernize the cabin's aesthetic.

The outdoor living space underwent a significant transformation to maximize enjoyment of the lakefront location. The old deck was completely reconfigured, resulting in a design that extends further toward the lake and provides multiple zones for relaxation and entertainment. An expanded seating area now accommodates larger gatherings, and the addition of modern cable railings preserves unobstructed views of the water and mountains beyond. The deck design also includes built-in storage for kayaks and other outdoor gear, keeping the space functional without compromising its sleek, modern feel.

Durable materials were chosen to weather the elements while complementing the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. Wood decking with a natural finish blends seamlessly into the terrain, while the minimalist glass and steel accents introduce a modern touch. This balance of rugged materials and contemporary details allows the deck to maintain the rustic cabin character, yet feel updated and timeless.

Inside, the focus of the remodel was on increasing the functionality of the kitchen and bathrooms, spaces that had grown inefficient over time. The kitchen, in particular, was in need of a complete overhaul to improve its layout and usability. Given the constraints of the existing space, a reorganization of the kitchen cabinetry was key to creating a more open and functional environment. By rethinking the placement of storage and appliances, we maximized the available space, allowing for more countertop area and better flow, making the kitchen more suitable for both food preparation and entertaining.

In the bathrooms, the goal was to improve both efficiency and materiality. High-end, durable materials like natural stone and wood were selected to complement the cabin’s rustic aesthetic while ensuring longevity. Modern fixtures and finishes add a touch of luxury to the compact spaces, transforming them into spa-like retreats within the home.

Overall, the Bee House renovation successfully merges modern design elements with the home’s rustic roots. By addressing both the exterior and interior spaces, we created a cohesive transformation that enhances the home’s functionality, livability, and connection to its natural surroundings. The result is a revitalized lakeside retreat where the owners can enjoy the best of outdoor living and modern comfort, all while maintaining the charm that makes the Bee House such a unique and beloved property.
