Normandy Park Remodel
Location: Normandy Park, WA
Area: 1,874 SF
Project Team: Refine Design Architecture, Malsam Tsang
Project Description:
The owners of this 1970s coastal ranch style house came to us looking for an addition and remodel of the interior spaces that would enhance its mid-century modern character while providing functional updates for contemporary living. With a vision of accentuating the home's original mid-century elements, the design incorporated curvilinear features, vaulted ceilings, and exposed wood beams to create a harmonious blend of old and new.
One of the most significant changes in this remodel was the transformation of the small, enclosed kitchen into a bright, open kitchen and dining room designed for entertaining. The new layout features ample counter space, modern appliances, and a spacious dining area that seamlessly connects to the kitchen. This open concept design not only enhances the flow of the home but also creates an inviting space for gatherings and culinary creativity. The use of large windows and skylights floods the area with natural light, making it a warm and welcoming heart of the home.
The living room underwent a substantial upgrade with the addition of a custom-built floor-to-ceiling bookshelf. This striking feature not only serves as a practical storage solution but also adds a touch of elegance and sophistication to the space. The large sliding doors open up to extend the living area outdoors, allowing for effortless indoor-outdoor living during the warm season. This seamless transition between the interior and exterior spaces is perfect for enjoying the coastal climate and scenic views.
The bathrooms received a vibrant makeover with pops of color and playful mid-century modern fixtures. These updates bring a sense of fun and personality to the spaces, while still maintaining the overall aesthetic of the home. The use of bold tiles, stylish vanities, and unique lighting fixtures create visually appealing and functional bathrooms that reflect the owners' appreciation for mid-century design.
The exterior of the home also saw thoughtful improvements. The new entryway, depicted in the architectural renderings, showcases a sleek and inviting design. A modern pathway leads to a covered entrance, offering both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The updated facade complements the overall mid-century modern theme, with clean lines and a minimalist approach that enhances the home's curb appeal.
In addition to the structural and architectural changes, careful attention was given to furniture selection to match the mid-century modern style. The interior design incorporates classic mid-century pieces, with a focus on simplicity, functionality, and beauty. The chosen furniture complements the architectural features of the home, creating a cohesive and stylish living environment.
This remodel and addition project successfully rejuvenates a 1970s coastal ranch style house, transforming it into a contemporary home that celebrates its mid-century modern roots. By enhancing original features and introducing thoughtful updates, the design creates a perfect blend of nostalgia and modernity. The result is a beautiful, functional, and inviting space that the owners can enjoy for years to come.
